Three Days on Chiloe Island

Three Days on Chiloe Island
Colourful stilt houses in Castro

Chiloe Island was another one of Lucas’s ideas, and another great one. It was a 3 hour bus ride from Puerto Montt, including a small car ferry to get onto the island. We based ourselves in Castro for the full three days, the biggest city on the island, and still not massive.

The island is known for its colourful stilt houses, churches, and seafood. We also found it to be peaceful and slower paced, perfect to unwind on for a bit. We had a full day to explore Castro, and a full day to explore Dalcahue, another seaside town just North of Castro.

As promised we saw a lot of colourful houses on stilts. These are photos from our day in Castro.

We also saw a yellow and purple corrugated iron church, Iglesia de San Francisco. This Catholic Church was built in 1912 and is the main church of the island. It could do with a wash.

For some reason Castro had a lot of Japanese sushi restaurants. We hadn’t had sushi since being in NZ, and it’s my favourite food so we thought we had better indulge. We both went for the salmon poke bowls to at least say we ate seafood in Castro. This was as yum as it looks!

Dalcahue seemed kind of like a smaller version of Castro. We clocked the whole waterfront and town within about 2 hours. At the waterfront we enjoyed watching sea lions swimming amongst the boats.

We also visited another Church, Iglesia de Dalcahue. This had beautiful colours of mint green, gold and marble white.

We had plans to go for dinner along the waterfront back in Castro for a seafood meal. Though when we got to the restaurant we realised it was only open during the day. It wasn’t a very hard decision for us to agree on going back to the same sushi restaurant for dinner again. We changed it up and ordered the sushi platter, which tasted better than it looks!

Chiloe Island was a pleasant surprise full of colour, seafood and churches. I would 100% recommend visiting it for a few days if around the area.

Next stop, Puerto Varas!
